The Green Sheet Book Review: Understanding Merchant Accounts (pdf format)
The Green Sheet, 04:10:04 - October, 2004
The book, "What Every Business Should Know About Accepting Credit Cards," By Anthony L. Ogden, is an authoritative primer on the merchant account relationship. It's written for merchants but could also prove to be a valuable tool for merchant level salespeople (MLSs). Ogden's book features easy-to-read chapters on all the basics: the card transaction cycle and merchant account risks and fraud, plus a detailed set of best practices.

He is a 1991 graduate of the prestigious Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C., and has had a practice concentration in the area of business transactions since 1994.

"Reading is Fundamental" (pdf format)
The Green Sheet, 00:07:02 - July 2002
If the massive efforts of practically every company in the bank card industry are embodied in the terms of a merchant agreement, shouldnít you at least read it? Surprisingly, despite the tremendous resources expended to build solid businesses and maintain strong merchant account portfolios, many operations never bother to read, review, and understand the terms of their merchant agreements.

"Who's on first? The Curious Effects of Mergers & Acquisitions" (pdf format)
The Green Sheet, 01:12:01 - December 2001
For those of us who are old enough to remember, you may recall the comedy team of Abbott & Costello and their trademark play on words routine entitled, "Who's on First?" The premise is that Abbott & Costello are watching a baseball game. Costello is trying to determine the names of the infield players. So, they engage in a humorous exchange in which Costello asks Abbott, "Who's on first?"

"Attorneys to the Rescue" Company Profile (2000) (pdf format)
The Green Sheet
Are you an ISO or MSP dealing with a troubled/MATCH listed merchant account or a merchant with a credit card problem? If so, help is on the way! The Law Office of Anthony L. Ogden has concentrated in legal dilemmas associated with merchant processing for about the past six years. Ogden says he has developed his practice to benefit ISOs and merchants and found his services to be very much needed in the bankcard industry. The service need is so great that Ogden recently associated Texas Attorney, Tony Osei, his former law school roommate from Georgetown University.

"The Importance of Merchant Education" (pdf format)
The Green Sheet, 00:09:01 - September 2000
In posting this statement many years ago, my grade school teachers had unwittingly identified a truism, which is very applicable to the merchant bank card industry today. To wit, Bank Card Law (BCL) has observed that ignorance causes tremendous, yet preventable, loss to the entire bank card industry every year. Exploring the definition of ignorance, Black's Law Dictionary defines it as "the want or absence of knowledge, [being] unaware or uninformed." If BCL had $100 for every time we heard a merchant say, "I didn't know ________" in connection with losing their merchant account or experiencing a significant monetary loss, we would probably be comfortably retired by now.

"Attorney to the Rescue Follow Up" (pdf format)
The Green Sheet, 99:04:02, April 1999
Ogden chose to set up the site due to the fact that the laws and regulations that apply to merchant credit card transactions can often be obscure and ill defined. His office is committed to forging relationships with banks, ISOs/MSPs, as well as the security and risk personnel of MasterCard International and VisaUSA to resolve merchant account problems and restore credit card accounts. The goal is to address and resolve many of the issues which disrupt the merchant's ability to accept credit cards and the ISO's/MSP's ability to establish accounts for acquiring banks.

"Attorney to the Rescue" (pdf format)
The Green Sheet, 97:07:01 - July 1997
The highly competitive business of merchant bankcard processing requires the ability to both procure and retain one's clients and customers. As a business transactions attorney, I have observed over the last several years (1994-1997), that many existing or prospective clients of banks and ISOs are listed on a Terminated Merchant File such as those of MasterCard International or Visa USA.
